Calvary Chapel has been formed as a fellowship of believers in the Lordship of Jesus Christ. Our supreme desire is to know Christ and be conformed into His image by the power of the Holy Spirit. We believe that the only true basis of Christian fellowship is His (Agape) love, which is greater than any differences we possess and without which we have no right to claim ourselves Christians.
Who we are can be summed up in three words:
-
Love – Matthew 22:37, 39
-
Serve – Mark 10:45
-
Equip – Ephesians 4:11-12
Love is number one at Calvary. We believe this is where it all starts. Matthew 22:37-39 basically says to love God first, then and only then will He give us the ability to love others. In other words, love God supremely and love others supernaturally.
Serve is number two. After falling in love with God and being empowered by His Spirit, we now have the ability to serve others each day. In Mark 10:45 the Bible says that Jesus didn’t come here to earth to BE served but TO serve. He is not only our example (CEO of the world coming to earth and becoming a servant), but is also our empowerer.
Equip is the last word that sums up who we are (our DNA). We feel very burdened to fight the tide in the American church todayof being Biblical illiterate. Instead of complaining about it, God has challenged us to shut up and put up. So we challenge our body to study God’s Word daily to get to know Him and fall in love with Him. We also simply teach His Word every Sunday, chapter by chapter, verse by verse as well as at our weekly small group Bible studies. When Paul was writing to the church in Ephesus in chapter 4 verse 12, he said the some people would be called to be pastors and leaders in the church to “equip the saints to do the work of ministry”. So we ask God to use us to do just that.
